Energy Savings for People on Low Incomes

Blue Mountains Neighbourhood Centres are excited about delivering significant savings to their clients thanks to a new appliance subsidy initiative by the New South Wales Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH).

“Through the Home Energy Action (HEA) Appliance Program we can now offer clients who are applying for one of our microfinance loans, discounts of 40 to 50 percent on good quality, energy efficient TV’s and fridges” said Deb Allen at Blackheath Area Neighbourhood Centre.

This means our clients who want to buy fridges or TV’s using our No Interest Loan Scheme will borrow less in order to buy what they need.

The HEA Appliance Program replaces your old inefficient appliances. When the new appliance is delivered, your old appliance is removed and recycled. Taking away the inefficient item could prevent you from losing $200 on annual energy bills for fridges and up to $125 for TV’s.

Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre (4759 2592), Blackheath Area Neighbourhood Centre, Winmalee Neighbourhood Centre, and the Lower Mountains Neighbourhood Centre are all part of the nationwide Good Shepherd Microfinance No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) Network. NILS is a no-interest loan offered to people on low incomes for essential goods and services. Loans are between $300 and $1200 and repayments are set up at an affordable amount over 12 to 18 months.

Morna Colbran from Winmalee Neighbourhood Centre said “We all know rising energy costs have a disproportionate impact on people with low incomes and we know energy efficient appliances are one of the best ways to combat this increase. We are very excited to be offering the HEA appliance program to our clients because not only do the subsidies offer immediate savings to them, but they will continue to save on their energy bills into the future.”

The OEH is partnered with The Good Guys and Good Shepherd Microfinance to deliver these subsides to people on low incomes in New South Wales.

“We’re really proud to be the exclusive supplier of the Home Energy Action Appliance Program. Doing good and making a difference in the local community is a significant part of how we do business at the good guys.” said Donald Furber, General manger, Commercial Sales at the Good Guys.

Adam Mooney, CEO of the Good Shepherd Microfinance said, “Offering the HEA Appliance Program through the NSW NILS Network, means that clients can access these subsidies at a 157 locations across NSW.” Mr Mooney said the HEA partnership had set themselves an ambitious target of reaching 3000 clients by June 2017.

With the continued hard work and dedication of organisations like the Blue Mountains Neighbourhood Centres and the collaboration of OEH and The Good Guys, reaching 3000 people means expected savings of $1 million of the ticket prices for our clients.
